TikTok Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug
A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Trade on Social Networks
Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Worries
Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting products of unknown origin.
Several professionals stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.
Platform Reaction and Content Elimination
According to the social media company, the service has removed problematic content and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Operations
Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, populated with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at home.
Within minutes of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Information and Costs
Within these groups, messages display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Actions
A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively moderated dangerous material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in interest to current price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious health risks”.
