The former England manager Shares Direction on Mentoring Young People Rather than Football Management

Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is avoiding a return to football management, explaining that it would be tough to duplicate the unique sense of purpose he felt as the national team coach.

He indicated his plan to channel his attention toward engaging the youth and addressing what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook presently prevalent in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Away from Coaching

In a recent radio interview, the manager was questioned on talk linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Role Models

Prior to the publication of his upcoming book, his new work on leadership, Southgate emphasized that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for the youth, drawing on experiences from his time as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

He feels that his time coaching England, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, he observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He went on: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Division

He stressed that “the British people share more commonalities than differences” but that the societal attention often highlights disagreement.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he said. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is expected to present further insights on guidance and public spirit inspired by his remarkable time in football.
