Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
